Dynamic illustrations are a bit like animated gifs, except instead of being fixed animations that repeat over and over, they are controlled by code, made possible by the flexible and powerful HTML5 technology. This means that dynamic illustrations move and behave in rich and complex patterns, never repeating the same way twice, offering endless variety while at the same time focusing on communicating a single idea, just like any good illustration should do.
WHY DYNAMIC ILLUSTRATIONS?
Beautiful moving images are key when communicating in the web. Why have fixed looping animations or prerecorded video when we have the technology to create living, ever changing images? We can make images that appear unique to every viewer, that change every time a viewer returns to the site and which adapt to the viewer's device, location, time, etc. We can use artificial intelligence and simulations to illustrate complex ideas or generate images procedurally that can tell a different story every time. The possibilities are endless.
Mecanographics is a small studio based in Madrid, funded by Nicolai Troshinsky. This project allows him to combine his experience as illustrator, animation filmmaker and videogame designer to create a new kind of contemporary illustration. While Nicolai designs, illustrates, animates and programs his own dynamic illustrations, the studio also works in collaboration with some of the best illustrators in Spain and can provide a wide range of visual styles.
